But I'm all straight now. Tiny reminded me to check the store list for canned cat food when I got out the last can.. ( dammed smart ass cat :-) )
I did check and update the list I'll take with me today.

The other day Dizzy Dick expounded on the inventions we have seen in our life time on his Blog Here.
Got to thinking about the advances I , and my age group have seen.
One of the first I remember was the cure for Polio, remember the sugar cube all we school kids got? The Salk vaccine...
I have a vivid memory of being on the school bus in about '60 or so and we were talking about the new digital calculators. Smaller than a book but you had to plug them in. At the time we wondered if we kids would every have one we could carry to
Car airconditoners.. Daddy's first one was a 1961 Chevy station wagon. But he won't use it cept on real hot days or when it rained and he had to roll the windows up.
Shoot,Whole house AC's even!! We had a window unit first but kept the swamp cooler just in case.
We actually got our own private home phone number along about 63 or so. Ma Bell finally offered a private number. No more 2 long and 2 shorts for our party line phone number. :-)
Television? When lighting took out our small ( 14"? ) one , daddy got a HUGE cabinet type that we thought was amazing. Still had only 4 channels of B&W.
( Now my 35" color digital gets 18 regular and everyone of those has at least 2 other alternative channels)
Speaking of TV , the wired remote control. Made a loud CLICK when you pushed a button.
Cars.. disc brakes! Automatic transmissions came into general use. But no one trusted them
Seat belts became standard about 1967 or so. ( my 66 VW, they were an option)
FM radio in your car. Three channels here IF you had the big huge whip antenna to pick them up. And they weren't stereo !!
Radial tires!! Tubeless tires!!
First commercial Jet airliner ( first introduced in 1949, in service in '52)
OK, my brain hurts trying to remember all this ancient history.. You take over and add what you remember in the comments below.
Mo' coffee. BBL
OK,, I just had to do a little research. and found these.
1950 The first credit card (Diners) invented by Ralph Schneider. Got my first one about '68
1952 The first diet soft drink sold.
1953 Radial tires invented, my fist set on a car was 1977. Transistor radio invented by Texas Instruments. My first one I got in 1963
1954 Oral contraceptives invented - the pill. Ray Kroc started McDonald's and the World started gaining weight!
1956 The first computer hard disk used. Got my first one while at Xerox about 1982 and it didn't have a hard disk. They didn't come along till 1956 The first computer hard disk used.
1958 The Hula Hoop invented by Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin.
LIB.. I checked one of my regular sites just now and found this link HERE ignore the top advertising part, but the rest of it fits glove in hand with what I was thinking this morning.
Early afternoon 2PM update.. Sure do like having the Dollar General store close here. Was in and out and back home so quick the heater in the car never got really warm!
Only thing they didn't have was a onion ( no produce ) So stopped at my BBQ joint and got one off them, nice a fresh since they had just delivered. They get what produce they do carry local , so I know this one hasn't been on a truck from California, or Mexico or here ever.
I have gotten so engrossed in this Ken Burns show about WWII I find it hard to walk away from.
See at ya after..... :-)
Wow Ben, you sure are bringing back some memories. I sure do remember those sugar cubes. Sitting here typing a comment on your blog in cyber space while listening to blue-grass on my satellite radio goes to show you just how far we have advanced.
ReplyDeleteAin't it amazing Dizzy? Wonder what's next?
ReplyDeleteI can remember the transistor radios we could carry in our shirt pocket! Used 9 volt batteries!
ReplyDeleteMan, so many changes in the last 10 years alone, makes you wonder just what's next!
Fun and scary at the same time!
Have a great day, buddy!
Hey, Jim. Think we've had more in the last 10 years really? or that just as far back as you can remember? :-)
ReplyDeleteI remember those sugar cubes too....each child that had permission to take the "cube" and did it, got a slice of white bread wrapped in a clear paper. I took that slice of bread home to show my family, because it was so new to us. Thanks for the memory.
ReplyDeleteGoldie
Goldie, I don't remember the white bread deal. Funny how we that grew up at about the same time remember different things huh? Thanks for stopping by.
